Hotel Montreal: a story of refinement & revival

Hotel Montreal, a boutique hotel located in the heart of Christchurch City, the story began in 2014.

Hotel Montreal was refurbished following the earthquakes, set up with elegant furnishings, natural New Zealand fabrics, and commissioned art – the property has a refined feel and boutique positioning.

Hotel Montreal has held a strong positioning in the industry, and has re-opened post lockdowns; stronger than ever. It is a true testament to the Manager (Lucy-Cooper-Dixon) and her team, having been in the accommodation industry for many years.

Embracing change when it was needed most

In 2020 when covid-19 arrived in New Zealand, like every accommodation property, the tenants at Hotel Montreal had to take a break. But following lockdowns, Lucy and her team were thrilled to open again under new management.

Of course with covid-19 impacting travel trends, it hasn’t been without its challenges. But Lucy couldn’t be happier to be back running Hotel Montreal and sharing the beauty of the property with Kiwi visitors (and hopefully international visitors someday soon too).

“What I love most about working in the accommodation industry is the fact that the industry changes all the time and it’s about creating a special environment for your guests. Post covid-19 is an example of this, where you had to change your tune on how you operate your business.”

– Lucy Cooper-Dixon, Hotel Manager

Developing a new business model to “move with the times”

The closure of international borders meant Lucy had to think fast on how to strengthen the property

As a boutique property, Hotel Montreal has just 26 rooms of a variety of sizes. It has a restaurant, bar, and gym on site, and is set up well for hosting functions and small events.

The property was originally set up as a traditional hotel, offering short-term stays only. But with the significant shift in the market since covid-19, Lucy and the team at Hotel Montreal had to rethink their strategy.

Today, the property has evolved to host a hybrid of both short and long-term guest stays.

“Post covid-19, we had to look at our business model and make changes. We re-angled our approach, now operating our boutique hotel alongside our long-term stays. It has created a lovely environment for everyone!

This was an effective change in our offering, as we saw a large gap in the market for those in between houses, or searching for a city pad. We are now able to offer that interim accommodation. It feels like home, but with all the facilities of a hotel – including your dog (as Hotel Montreal is dog-friendly)!”

– Lucy Cooper-Dixon, Hotel Manager

An inspiring approach to business & resilience to change

“It’s been a challenging time, but you’ve just got to move with the times”

The hospitality industry is always changing and evolving, and in order to thrive, you must adapt and grow with it.

For Hotel Montreal, the shift to both short and long-term guests was not only an effective strategy, but it also serviced a gap in the current market.

“The hospitality industry is a very motivating industry to be in. We learn a lot everyday, we meet a lot of people and we are exposed to a lot of opportunities. With covid-19, it’s been a challenging time, but you’ve just got to move with the times.”

– Lucy Cooper-Dixon, Hotel Manager

Working in synergy: Hotel Montreal & Preno

Hotel Montreal and Preno have worked well together since the beginning, and the reason is simple: they’re both refined and efficient.

When things are overly complicated, this makes times of change even more difficult. For Hotel Montreal, having a proactive approach to business, along with a user-friendly system, was vital to adapt to a significant change in the market.

“Each hotel business I have worked for, I have always recommended and implemented Preno. It is a user-friendly tool that is easy to understand and you don’t need to be an expert. So many other systems require unnecessary steps – Preno is very simple.”

– Lucy Cooper-Dixon, Hotel Manager

A mutual passion for hospitality & drive for innovation

Here at Preno, we couldn’t be more thrilled to see Hotel Montreal continue to prosper, providing support where we can. We also couldn’t be more thankful for Hotel Montreal’s support of us, particularly their generous hospitality, hosting our Preno on Tour event last year.
